On both systems there's also been a marked delay time in program initiation (when they start at all,) and running the usual malware/spyware detection programs such as MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot S&D, etc., comes up empty the same with virus scans.

On vacation I tried to download and run Verizon's VZAccessManager software - so as to use my ancient flip-phone as a tether - and couldn't get the system to detect the phone ("A wireless device was not detected!" is the message I would get.) After attempting multiple tweaks with the assistance of Verizon Tech Support via that phone, he came to the conclusion that I've got a problem with the system - something running on it that shouldn't be there. On the Vista laptop it's less consistent and seemingly not dependent on the right-click/Admin selection. On the Win7 system (on which I'm typing this,) I'm getting the "Windows Explorer has stopped working" and "Windows Explorer is restarting" message pair every time I try to open any program from the desktop (such as MalwareBytes, Spybot, IrfanView, anything,) using right click and "Run As Administrator." They'll open and run normally if I do the ordinary left-click, or if I right-click and "Run As Admin" from the Start menu.

I'm getting this problem on a desktop running Windows 7 and on a laptop running Vista.
